Smarties

While looking at the open university philosophy section I came across a video lecture by Professoor Russel Stannard. He was discussing the question of whether we ever have free will in any of our decision making processes and he was demonstrating this through smarties (yes the title does have some relevance, im not just food obsessed!) And that got me thinking can we ever independantly make a free decision. When faced with a bowl of smarties I will always automatically choose the blue smarties, not because I particularly like blue smarties, but because in the back of my mind blue smarties will always be the ones with the chemicals in which make you go hyper and therefore they are fobidden. Surely that is marketing (the famous blue smartie adverts) effecting my judgement and meaning that my decision to choose a blue smartie is not my own. So next time i go to pick a smartie i am going to choose a colour and then deliberately eat a different one to attempt to outsmart my brain and therefore think for myself!!
